Except it isn't the same melody BishBosh. Also the bass line is completely different, the cowbell part is totally different. What, are they going to sue every record that has a cowbell on?
As for the vocal styling, it's falsetto. Maybe Frankie Valli should sue Marvin Gaye for singing in a high voice.

I'm not sure that the personalities of the involved parties is a proper basis for applying the law

Of course it isn't, I don't believe the decision to be dangerous though, not unless Thicke and Williams go on an armed rampage in protest.

Re: Plagiarism
that whole song sounded like a rip off of got to give it up not only the melody but the vocal style as well robin thicke was imitating Marvin

I'm not sure that the personalities of the involved parties is a proper basis for applying the law.

This is a crazy decision and a dangerous precedent that should be overturned on appeal.

That's my wording when I say teh "feel", as it's the only way I can describe the similarities. As BRANDED said, it's the bass sound and teh percussion that sounds similar, but it's not the same. Fucked up precedent they've set here. Whoever is related to the first artist to record the classic Blues riff can clean up.

Re: Plagiarism
This one, 'Blurred Lines' has set a dangerous legal precedent.
If I was Charlie Watts right now I'd be considering suing the Marvin Gaye estate for ripping off the cowbell intro of 'Honky Tonk Women'

BRANDED 4:21 Wed Mar 11
Re: Plagiarism
Millions of songs sound similar. It only is ever an issue when lawyers and money is involved.

cholo 4:20 Wed Mar 11
Re: Plagiarism
Glad they got sued, because that Thicke is a cunt and Williams an irritating cunt. And yes the two tracks do sound similar but I've heard much more obvious ripoffs.

Re: Plagiarism
and then there's nice guy Tom Petty who won't sue any artist when they RIP HIM RIGHT OFF - and claims "i'm sure they didn't do it with intent"

NO TOM THEY DID IT TO MAKE CASH OFF YOUR TALENT

like that new song which is basically FREEFALLIN

and the Chilli Peppers ripping off Last dance with Mary Jane

BRANDED 4:18 Wed Mar 11
Re: Plagiarism
In this instance it was bass, drums and percussion as opposed to melody and words. It's a fucker cos they were probably all created by the musicians and not Marvin. Makes a bit of a mockery out of copyright but where there's money the lawyers will come running.

Re: Plagiarism
I mentioned The Killing Joke one before. The guitar rif is a deffo rip off.

Funny thing is Nirvana always said they were very influenced by the bands of the early 80s inc The Bunnymen and I'm sure they would of heard of Killing Joke;

I'm a big fan as well

Russ of the BML 4:04 Wed Mar 11
Re: Plagiarism
What are we talking about here when we mention 'Feel'. I mean, Take That;s new pile of stinking shit has got a Coldplay 'Feel'. Alot of Coldplay's stuff has got a U2 'Feel'. How is this going to be balanced in the future?

Lily Hammer 3:53 Wed Mar 11
Re: Plagiarism
Like I said, they have been sued for having the same feel as Marvin Gaye's song. Therefore, Pharell Williams better pray that Curtis Mayfield doesn't have any family who fancy their chances , because his "Happy" song has more of a Curtis Mayfield feel than Blurred Lines has a Marvin Gaye feel. If it weren't for the banal lyrics, I could have believed it was an unreleased Mayfield track.

Re: Plagiarism
There was an interesting case surrounding the songs written by Neil Innes for The Rutles movie where he was sued by the owners of The Beatles catalogue. Innes successfully proved that he wrote the songs from his memory (of what Beatles songs sounded like) rather than by listening to the songs and parodying them.

Re: Plagiarism
I understood the Gaye family questioned the song and tried to negotiate and then Thicke and Williams sued their ASS to try and scare them away.
